most of the time, printers will print very well with replacement cartridges, but it then, also, depends on the quality of the cartridge mfg.
as for printers declining after many years, it’s a tough call. some of them work very well up until one day they don’t work at all. but i think it depends on the mfg, and type of printer and even the amount of use they get.
something i would recommend is to take the printer apart and give it a real good cleaning. use lint free cloth, rubbing alcohol and qtips. lots and lots of newspaper. while you’re in there, check and see if there are any signs of ‘old age’ that might impact the printing, such as loose or sloppy drive belts, excess inks which might just gunk up the insides, and such. if it still doesn’t perform to your expectations, try a name brand cartridge and see if that helps. if it does, then you know that you should stick with them for better performance. if it doesn’t, then maybe you need to start watching the sale flyers.
the no-name inks have a tendency to leave excess ink behind, but it has not been proven to my satisfaction, to say that they leave any more than the name brands.
so once you clean it up, keep an eye on it as you compare cart to cart.
